Web Design in 2010-2011 - Analysis

As we're coming to the middle of this year, everyone is trying to analyze the recent trends in web designing and web development. However, in this article, we'll see what web designers and developers are trying to utilize with the new features to create impressive designs. We will also try to look into the factors that are driving this change.

1. The days of static design visuals are dead
With the online technology that is available today, web designers are coding websites more creatively than using simple images and html/css. Clients have come to expect a higher level of functionality and interactivity as they visit more and more websites that utilize things like Ajax, and JavaScript. Whilst CSS3/HTML5 has started to step on the toes of JavaScript, JavaScript itself has started to inch into the territory of Flash. JavaScript has just finished a major revision of its specifications for the language. Once browser companies adopt these standards, web developers will be provided with more tools to improve their capabilities in creating web applications.

2. Grid-based designs, Mobile Designs, Retro Designs are gaining popularity as well.
But Grid based is used mostly in portfolios, product pages and big blogs; they almost never appear on corporate websites or in online shops. With the huge amount of data present, classifying information based on context rather than content will be paramount for companies which handle large amount of data (financial, social, etc).

Web Design in 2010-2011 - Analysis

3. Print Design influence
Traditional techniques from print design are increasingly being applied to the Web, be they layout techniques or rich versatile typography. Web Designers are taking layout and design inspiration from print. This includes lots of whitespace, large type, use of a grid and clear hierarchy of elements. The layouts of these websites often resemble those of print magazines or posters, with striking headlines, multi-column text, highlighted quotations, indented text, supporting imagery, side notes and footnotes.

4. Faster and better Web browsers
Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera has offered more choices to web users. But, well, it is part of a web designer's job to make sure that texts are easy and nice to read on all major browsers and platforms. With browser wars is in full force, Techniques for progressive enhancement are more commonplace than before, giving users of modern web browsers a better web experience than those who will not or cannot use them. This has surely drive competition in web designing.

5. Growth of community-oriented Platforms
In many ways, the growth of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has led the web to be much more community-oriented. Along with these changes will come increased focus in getting information in real-time. Twitter is one of the examples that give immediate and breaking information on the sites. With more and more growth of such social media platforms and more people participating in the creation of information on the web, the way in which we obtain information has shift from being from a singular source, into a more community-created source.

6. Interactive Designs
Web designers of Web applications are paying significantly more attention to the way in which functionality is presented and are trying to improve the user experience with more interactive and responsive solutions. There's a lot more emphasis now on site usability and creating sites that are minimalist in design and easy to navigate (perfect use of CSS and a grid based layout). Horizontal scroll bars have been out there for a decade, but today it feels that they are gaining a new context. The move to horizontal scroll bars is probably an attempt among some designers to provide a more distinct user experience. One way to make websites more responsive is through "keypress navigation," which hasn't been widely adopted so far. But lately we've observed more designs implementing this effectively. Web designers of Web applications are paying significantly more attention to the way in which functionality is presented and are trying to improve the user experience with more interactive and responsive solutions.

7. Slab Typefaces
These are relatively new as in the past logos and headers were smaller and more understated by web designers. However, combined with the trend toward larger headers, slab typefaces demand the reader to take notice.

8. Rich and strong Typography
It has played a major role in Web design for years now. Bold, strong, heavy headlines can effectively convey the purpose of an e-commerce website or portfolio, while subtler headings help structure content and improve legibility. Obviously, the big change we're seeing today is richer, more versatile typography. Oversized logos on an equally oversized header and Footer. We've further noticed that Web designers are extending their font stacks, adding increasingly more fall-back fonts in case a specified font is not available.

9. Recent trends
like embossing, PNG transparency, rich user Interfaces, Font replacement, Huge Images, Modal boxes(A modal box is like the pop-up's more sophisticated They serve as a user-friendly alternative to classic JavaScript windows), Media blocks, The magazine look, Carousels (slideshow navigations, in which the content rotates vertically or horizontally), Introduction blocks(place the most important message of the website right there and thus make sure that readers get the message as quickly as possible.) will continue to grow in this year.

10. More Personalization
As web designers look for more ways of attracting users and prospects to their websites and generating business online, personalization is emerging as an important component of managing the web experience for site visitors - and delivering business value. Be simple, invisible complexity, big and bold, art and creativity, bigger picture. Web Typography is going to reach some new heights in 2010-2011. JQuery, Mootools as well as CSS3 are evolving and reaching new levels of quality and 'interactivity'. Everything seems to be moving forward to larger elements which focus the attention.

If you haven't checked out CSS3 and HTML5 websites yet ( like http://www.12thi.com ), you should really look into it because they will change the way you design and code. You can take advantage of the new features to create cleaner and more efficient layout.

It is possible that we have missed some other great trends and factors. Why don't you contribute some interesting information here? Please don't hesitate to share it with us in comments.

Best Web Site Design - What Makes the Best Website Design?

By experience, a visually compelling website draws in interest and awe over one that is very ordinary and-to some extent-really bland and boring.

One could just spend hours browsing the Internet in search of best designed website and observe the varying styles and approach used in the design of each, yet still end up puzzled at how the people behind the design can actually come up with such artistically inspiring websites.

Experts summarize that there are four regular elements that comprise the best website design. These are content, usability, appearance, and visibility.

Best Web Site Design - What Makes the Best Website Design?

Obviously, content refers to the information on the website. But providing information online isn't as simple as just pasting it on the page and leave it for the visitors to read. There should still be structure in its presentation, leaving space to highlight important content in the same manner as magazines layout their pages. Thus, it must compliment the visuals you have in the page.

When designing a website, one must remember to put objects (content, photos, icons, etc.) in the page only if it has some use. It doesn't necessarily mean that if it looks nice, it'll benefit the overall design of your website. This is also why, after putting all the content and images you have together in the page, you have to look at its entirety or appearance. Placing too many objects or design elements in a page may make it cluttery, which makes the design of your site unappealing.

Putting these factors together takes practice and diligence. Also, one should consider the user's browsing experience whenever designing a website. The visuals and all the effort you'd done will go to waste if your website takes forever to load since you put in too many photos, added a big flash animation, or the like. Thus, proper care should be implemented in designing a site and testing it afterwards is a must-do activity.

Website Development and Website Design - Sound Synonymous, Yet Are Different

With websites becoming the norm for marking a presence on the online platform, two terms website development and website design have gained wide popularity. Although these two terms are widely in vogue, there are popular misconceptions as most often website development and website design are used as synonyms and mostly as generic terms. There are, however, important differences in the delineation of these two terms and therefore understanding the nuances of website development and web design is critical for successfully building a website.

What is meant by web design?

The visual representation of a website is the responsibility of a web designer. Web designers determine the graphical representation of the website. Their main job is to design an appealing website so that the targeted audience gets hooked on it and shows interest for navigation. Web designers create the entire look of the website and the attraction quotient of the website is determined by them. Their expertise ranges from color scheme to template design to the layout design of the web pages. A good web designer is typically adept at graphic design, flash design as well as animations and uses these techniques to add to the beauty of the website. Programs like Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks are skillfully used by web designers to achieve their ends.

Website Development and Website Design - Sound Synonymous, Yet Are Different

What does web development mean?

Web development is sometimes called the ''back-end'' of the website, unlike web design which is termed ''front-end'' of a website. It deals with the technical aspects of websites. The functionality and the logic part of the website are maintained by development teams. The aspects of coding that lies behind the working of a website and which is not visible on the exterior sides are taken care of by web developers. Web developers technically engineer the website right from its inception till its end. How the website will function, what will be the navigation like, what will be the user's experience in terms of browsing, how much time will be required to load the page - all aspects that go behind the construction of a website fall under the domain of web development. It is a highly expertise job and demands proficient mastery in HTML as well in dynamic scripting languages like PHP, ASP, and ASP.NET etc.

Thus, website design and development are two different aspects which work in cohesion and both play key roles in the making of a website. There can be overlapping between the two in terms of skill sets but typically they are two specialized fields that require knowledge specific to their domains. It is of cardinal importance that the differences among website design and website development are well understood by clients engage in this field of website building as well for those aspirants who want to make a career in this field.

Website Designs Secrets - What Makes an Effective Website

When you build a website it is not just a matter of build it and expect that visitors will arrive and start buying. There are a lot of little extra bits that you need to remember to include to make an effective website.

What is an effective website?
An effective website is one in which plenty of people are finding the site and a good number of these can find their way around the website and ultimately make a purchase or contact you about your services. An ineffective website may have little or no traffic and a lot of this will bounce - leave almost immediately without actually becoming a paying customer.

So what are the secrets of an effective website?

Website Designs Secrets - What Makes an Effective Website

1. Make sure people are finding you.
Just because you have built a website, or have had a professional web designer build it for you, does not mean that the site will jump to the top of the search engines and be found and visited by hordes of people. Work is still needed and a lot of it!

You need to make sure that you are spreading the word of your website far and wide, through social media networking, forums, blogs, articles and so on. Do not tell anyone that you exist and your website is going to fail.

2. Make sure that people can find what they want.
If the visitors are arriving looking for products, make sure that these products can be found. Regularly check your website traffic statistics and see what terms people are searching for to find your website and this will give you a clue as to what they want. Go to the page that they are landing on and see if it is clear from there where to go.

Check your statistics for any keywords with high bounce rates - they could be irrelevant but they could equally well be struggling to find what they want. If this is the case, then maybe a well placed small banner can keep them on track.

Add a search function to your website to make sure that anyone struggling to find what they want can find what you have on offer - you might be surprised at how many purchases result from search results within your website.

And split down large pages so that the important information is easy to find and at hand. Make correct use of headers, bold and other highlights to steer visitors around the page.

3. Make sure that these visitors can go on to make a purchase.
I have seen ecommerce website designs that have missed a link back to the shopping basket. This is fine if your visitors are only ever going to buy one item at a time, but if they go looking for more products, which they can't find, you still want them to complete the purchase.

Do not hide tax and postage information. If this is suddenly added to the final charge the surprise can put a lot off. Spell out additional charges early on, maybe even offering to reduce them with larger sales.

And whether you are an ecommerce website or not, make your contact details clear. Some people do not like phoning and others do not like contact forms. Whilst others cannot click on an email link and open it as they only ever email through webmail. So give a multitude of contact methods so that they can contact you the way that they prefer.

That's it. My secrets of website design for an effective website.

An Introduction To Thatch Roof Design

Thatching is a craft that is traditionally handed down from father to son, taking many years to perfect. It is not normally taught in other ways. So there is relatively little documented information. In South Africa there is evidence that many home owners and potential home owners would welcome such information.

Because thatching is a labour intensive process, the cost of a thatched roof is normally up to 60% higher than that of a conventional roof. This price difference can be limited, however, by using the roof space efficiently, with dormer windows and a mezzanine level for instance where the walling and plastering costs will be less. The insulating properties are very good, keeping the home warm in winter and cool in summer. Although thatch is one of the oldest building materials, modern, innovative laying techniques ensure that the interior finish is clean, with no loose pieces hanging down to harbour insects or encourage spider webs.

Thatch has a natural ability to free-curved shapes to create a warm, informal finish that blends in well because of its natural appearance. Thatch, being a natural material, will mellow in colour from its original fresh straw to a dark sheen that tones in wonderfully with the South African outdoors. At the same time, the rustic roughness of textured thatch inside the building lends itself to co-ordination with other natural materials such as stone & wood etc.

An Introduction To Thatch Roof Design

The high open ceilings in thatch roofed homes give the rooms a spacious, airy feeling that can be followed through with large window openings, and perhaps stone or slate floors to add to the rustic ambience.

MATERIALS

Thatching makes use of materials that are naturally available - grass or reed. In South Africa certain indigenous grasses are normally used.
There are coarse varieties of this grass, with stalk thicknesses greater than 4 mm, that are not considered suitable for thatching.
Natal thatching grass has a finer texture than the Transvaal grass when laid and is often preferred for this reason.
The stalks of thatching grass are normally hollow and about 3 mm thick. Dekriet stalks, however, are solid and about 3-4 mm thick and considered the best quality and therefore the most expensive.

DESIGN

A thatched roof should have a minimum pitch of 45° and min 35° over dormer windows. Take advantage of the steep pitch to provide accommodation in the roof space to make the design more cost effective.
Try to keep a thatched roof as simple as possible, but the ability of thatch to adapt to free curved shapes to develop a less formal plan could be implemented.

Consider flashed areas; features that pene¬trate or interrupt the roof should be avoided as far as possible. Chimney shafts should be designed to penetrate the roof plane at the ridge, thus avoiding the necessity of back flashing.

Soil vent pipes are best located on external walls so that they penetrate the thatch near the eaves line.

Rain water must not be allowed to discharge from a high level roof onto a thatched roof at a lower level.

Thatch, 150 mm thick, has a mass of about 20-25 kg/m2. The roof framing normally consists of eucalyptus poles that have been chemically treated. The poles may be spaced up to 900 mm apart. But Building Socie¬ties in South Africa will usually in¬sist on a maximum spacing of 700 mm and a minimum pole diameter of 100 mm.

The grass that is used to form the ridge capping is thinner, softer and more pliable than that used for the main roof. The lower edges of the ridge capping may be trimmed to a decorative pro¬file with chevrons or scallops.
Alter¬natives to grass ridges are often used, the most common being preformed fibre¬glass, sheet metal and cement. The ridge is the most vulnerable part of a thatched roof and particular care must be taken to ensure that this feature is absolutely watertight.

Thatched roofs are con¬structed with dripping eaves; meaning rain¬water gutters and downpipes are not provided. Eaves overhangs should be at least 650mm and provision should be made at ground level, around the building, to prevent erosion due to water dripping from the eaves overhang.

DURABILITY

A thatched roof will normally last for about 25 years if properly laid. Dekriet will typically last a little longer, up to 35 years. A thatch roof ridge require renewal every 4-6 years.

CONS & PROS OF THATCHED ROOFING

Advantages

As local materials always tend to harmonize with the land¬scape surrounding their place of origin, thatch, as a natural material, will always blend well with a rural environment.

There is an ecological advantage to be gained by using thatch in that it is pro¬duced by natural processes that do not use scarce and expensive resources of energy.

A thatched roof will ensure that a building will be cool in summer and warm in winter.

Disadvantages

Thatched houses are more vulnerable to fire risk than those covered with other materials, and it is therefore imperative that precautions be taken to reduce the risk.

Being an organic material, thatch is susceptible to decay and decomposition, and precautions must be taken to minimize the possibility of this process taking place

More expensive than conventional roofing.

Maintenance intensive.

FIRE PROTECTION

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Lightning protection

Lightning conductors should be installed to protect the thatched buildings, in accordance with the SABS Code of Practice.

Two avoid an excessive high mast, two masts or a spike on a chimney can be installed if the roof is not covered by the protection zone.

Chimneys

Chimney stacks should be con¬structed in such away that the outer faces in contact with the thatch do not become hot. A full brick thick¬ness (220 mm) is normally sufficient.

All mortar joints in the stack must be properly filled.

The top of the stack must extend to at least 1m above the highest point of roof.

Install a spark arrestor, consisting of a piece of stainless steel wire mesh, fitted 700 mm from the top, covering the full width of the flue.

HOW TO REDUCE COMBUSTIBILITY

o Fire retardant chemicals

o Fire resistant blankets

o Soaking with water

Advertising Design

Advertising Design is the most important point of advertising. If your advertising is designed poorly, who is going to pay attention to it? The answer is nobody will. The Design will in most cases be done by a professional designer; there are a lot of companies out there that will design you, logos, banners, posters and anything else you can think of for advertising. These companies that specialise in advertising design will charge you for their services.

Depending on the reputation of the company, depending on the quality and the standards of designers will all contribute to what the Advertising cost will be. You will find companies that do offer this service at a low price, but be warned, they may be that price for a reason, check out the companies first, find out if you can see some examples of their previous work (if they have a website it is likely to be available on there, if not you will be able to request some) and look for customer reviews.

Web Design

Advertising Design does not have to be performed by a professional though, a lot of companies design their own logos, and posters. It is important that your logo is appealing to the eye, vibrant and something that you will remember. Simple designs are often effective designs; do not feel that just because you have put a lot of detail, a lot of images, a lot of text into your design that it makes it good. Less can often be more and as long as it catches the eye and gets to the point, your advertising will be successful.

Free Police Car Auctions - Buying Your New Car at Police Auctions

There are so many free police car auctions running today. Back in the old days, these auto auctions were unheard of by the public. Only the car dealers knew that these car auctions were taking place. Since then, times have changed, and today, the public can attend these car auctions as much as car dealers do. It is similar to getting your own car from a dealership. The only major difference is that you won't have to pay so much and you need to consider the condition of the used cars. These might give car dealerships a run for their money but this means you get to pocket huge savings on your end.

What Are Police Car Auctions?

Buying Selling Auctions

Police car auctions differ slightly from ordinary auto auctions. In a police car auction, they are mostly participated in by police agencies, county sheriffs as well as state and federal law enforcement agencies that have acquired lost, abandoned or impounded vehicles. The police department ends up with these used cars as a result of arrests and forfeitures. The police department's main goal in throwing the auto auction is to get rid of the vehicles while raising funds for their budget or any general funds. Sometimes they just want to get back the cost of keeping the cars in storage. This is the main reason why you will get great bargains when you look for a car through these police auto auctions.

Free Police Car Auctions - Buying Your New Car at Police Auctions

How to Choose the Car that You Want

Before you attend these police car auctions, you have to be sure about what you want. It would be best if you research the type of car that you want as well as the ones provided on the list of the car auction. Check the usual price, how much they usually go for whenever they are sold at auto auctions. If you already have a car that you're eyeing at the auction, do what you can to find out about the used cars history. Check the VIN number and get a vehicle history report if possible so you'll have an idea of what kind of issues and maintenance or damage the car has suffered throughout its life. Once the bidding day at the car auctions has arrived, make sure to bring enough cash. There are times when these car auctions would not accept checks, so make sure you have enough to buy the car you want.
